Connections in Color: Mental Health Art Contest 2025 Reception & Awards Ceremony
Join us on September 22, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, at the Quinlan Visual Arts Center for a warm and inspiring Reception & Awards Ceremony.
At 6:00 PM, we'll celebrate the outstanding talent of student artists by announcing the winners of the contest—each receiving a $500 cash prize, and each of their schools' art departments receiving $500 in funding.
This special gathering offers a wonderful opportunity to come together as a community, honor these young creatives, and embrace the theme of "connection through nature and mental well-being." Whether you're a family member, educator, artist, or advocate, your presence will help shine a light on the profound interplay between creativity, connection, and mental health.
We look forward to celebrating with you at the Quinlan!
Connections in Color: A Mental Health Art Contest
Theme:
This year, we encourage students to explore how connection to nature and the world around us influences mental well-being. Whether it’s the serenity of a quiet forest, the power of the ocean, or the sense of peace from a sunset, we want to see how the natural world fosters resilience, emotional balance, and self-discovery.
Competition Details:
Students will create their artwork on-site with provided materials (electronic tools and pre-existing designs are not permitted).
Two winners will each receive a $500 cash prize, and their school’s art department will also receive $500 in funding.
All artwork created during the competition will be showcased at the Quinlan Visual Arts Center for a special exhibition. The winning pieces will be enlarged, professionally framed, and later presented to the students’ schools for permanent display, ensuring their creativity and message continue to inspire for years to come.
How to Participate:
Students are encouraged to pre-register by Friday, September 19, at 5:00 PM. While onsite registration will be available starting at 1:00 PM on September 21st, space is limited, so pre-registration is highly recommended. Register here.
This event is an opportunity for our community to come together, recognize the artistic talent of young creatives, and raise awareness about the powerful role that nature plays in mental health. We look forward to seeing you there!

Wellness Walk
Join us for a Mental Health & Nature Walk!
This group offers a welcoming space for anyone looking to openly discuss mental health while enjoying the calming presence of nature.
We will begin at Riverside Track, where parking is conveniently located. Our walk will take us past the historic Riverside Military Academy, a prestigious institution founded in 1907 that continues to serve as one of the nation's leading military college preparatory schools for boys in grades 6-12.
Next, we will stroll along the scenic route to the Chattahoochee Park Pavilion, a site rich in history. Originally constructed in 1900 as part of Chattahoochee Park, an amusement park that operated until 1923, it later became a retreat for Georgia Power employees and their families. Though much of the park now lies beneath Lake Lanier, the pavilion still stands as a reminder of the area's past.
As we continue, we’ll pass homes and the American Legion Post 7 before arriving at the pavilion by the lake, where we will pause for a mindfulness exercise, taking in the peaceful surroundings. The walk will conclude with a return to Riverside Track, leaving you refreshed and reconnected.

Connections in Color Public Art Unveiling
We are thrilled to invite you to a special event that blends art, community, and mental health awareness—the unveiling of the winning artworks from the Connections in Color: Mental Health Art Contest!
Event Details: Date: September 14th Time: 10:00 AM - 11:00AM Location: Hall Area Transit Building, 687 Main Street SW, Gainesville, GA 30501
This special event takes place during National Suicide Prevention Week and on R U OK? Day—Thursday, September 12th—a day dedicated to encouraging meaningful conversations and checking in on the people we care about.
At this event, we will reveal the winning artworks by Jasmine Singleton (North Hall High School), Mia Gamez (Johnson High School), and Alexandra Soto (North Hall High School), which have been transformed into vibrant public art displays on the Hall Area Transit building. These pieces vividly depict how community support can combat loneliness, boost self-esteem, and enhance emotional well-being—powerful reminders of the importance of connection in mental health.
In addition to celebrating these young artists, we will be awarding funding to the art departments of their schools, further supporting the creative talents of the next generation.
This unveiling is more than just a celebration of art; it’s an opportunity for our community to come together, reflect on the importance of asking "R U OK?", and recognize how a simple conversation can change a life.
We hope you will join us for this meaningful event.
